Drama
Drama lessons are taught in a Drama and Dance Studio which can also be split to create two smaller rehearsal areas.
GCSE Drama students begin the course in Year 10; it involves many areas of study involving a variety of practical modules and theory topics. This is an optional subject. Throughout the two years studying GCSE Drama the students study a variety of practical options including practitioners and different styles of performance including physical theatre, naturalism and Epic Theatre. Students study a variety of topics to assist this development including physical theatre, theme based work and scripts.
Component 1 is a controlled assessment piece worth 40% of their final marks. It is assessed through 2 tasks. Task 1 is a Devised Performance worth 20% where candidates devise a practical performance based on a theme, linked with a practitioner or genre (Groups of 2-5). Task 2 is a Devised Performance Report where candidates must complete a written report of the practical work they have completed in Task One, under formal supervision (20%). In Component 2 students must perform two contrasting scenes from a published play. The final piece is Component 3 which is a written exam where they are assessed on their ability to analyse a set text as an actor, designer or director and a response to a live theatre performance.
The confidence, creativity levels and skills students develop throughout the Drama GCSE course will equip them for numerous careers. The study of Drama also gives students the opportunities to perform in front of a live audience. Even if students do not opt for Drama as a GCSE Option, there are plenty of opportunities for students to get involved in extra-curricular Drama including theatre trips, clubs and performances.
